Worship: The Cult Simulator That’s Bloody Good Fun

At this year’s Gamescom, we had the devilish pleasure of meeting the minds behind Worship, the upcoming cult-crawling roguelike that’s set to possess PC and consoles next year. After getting our hands on an early build, we can confidently say that Worship is shaping up to be a wickedly entertaining experience that blends dark humor with strategic gameplay.

Unholy Ambitions

Worship puts you in the robes of an aspiring cult leader with one goal: bring about the end of the world. To achieve this apocalyptic dream, you’ll need to recruit followers, perform blood rituals, and curry favor with eldritch gods. The game’s recently released “Definitive Field Guide to Blood Sacrifice” gameplay video gives a tantalizing glimpse into the macabre mechanics that await players.

Blood, Sweat, and Fears

At its core, Worship is about building and managing your cult. The more followers you amass, the more powerful you become. But these devotees aren’t just for show – they’re a resource to be used and, often, sacrificed. The game’s dynamic blood-ritual system allows you to draw powerful sigils using your own blood or that of your loyal minions.

Unhallowed Grounds

During our hands-on time at Gamescom, we explored Worship’s visually striking world. The art style strikes a perfect balance between charming and grotesque, creating an atmosphere that’s both unsettling and oddly inviting. As we led our small band of cultists through eerie landscapes, we encountered puzzles to solve, enemies to slay, and opportunities to spread our unholy influence.

Cooperative Chaos

One of Worship’s most exciting features is its support for up to four-player co-op. Teaming up with fellow cultists at the convention led to some hilariously chaotic moments as we competed for followers and vied for the gods’ attention. The potential for both cooperation and competition among players adds a delightful layer of unpredictability to the experience.

Verdict in Progress

While our time with Worship was limited, it left us eager to dive deeper into its blasphemous world. The blend of strategy, horror, and dark humor creates a unique gameplay experience that’s both challenging and entertaining. The developers at Chasing Rats Games have crafted a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still offering depth and replayability. Worship is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of roguelikes, strategy games, and anyone with a penchant for the occult. With its release slated for next year, we’re already sharpening our sacrificial daggers in anticipation. Keep an eye on this unholy offering – Worship might just be the cult hit of the year.
